When you are at work, do you get frustrated because things happen differently, not the way you want them to be? You see people milling around but nothing gets accomplished. And in the daily hustle and bustle, have you felt that goals just remain as goals. Then it’s time for you to do something differently and make a difference.

Most people are content just to stand around listening for orders. And it isn’t unusual to adopt a mentality of always following a leader. But maybe, somewhere inside of you, you feel the desire to make things happen – to be the head, not the tail. Then maybe leadership is for you.

Some people believe that great leaders are made, not born. Yes, it may hold true that a number of people are born with natural talents. However, without practice, without drive, without enthusiasm, and without experience, there can be no true development in leadership.

You must also remember that good leaders are continually working and learning to improve their natural skills. It takes commitment to improve constantly in whatever endeavor the person chooses to take.

First of all, let us define what leadership is. In being a leader, one must be able to extend his influence over others to achieve a goal, or an objective. He plays a role in organizing and maintaining cohesion of a group.

Contrary to what most people believe, it is not all about power. It is not about provoking others or driving them by fear. It is about inspiring them in achieving the goals of the organization. It is giving them equal treatment and helping them see the big picture of the organization. You must be a leader not a boss.

First of all, you have to get people to follow you. How should one do this?

People follow others when they see a clear sense of purpose. People will only follow you when they see a clear path. Remember that stickers in cars? The one that says, don’t follow me, I’m lost too? The same is true for leadership. If you don’t know where you’re going, chances are people will not follow you at all.

You yourself must know the vision of the organization. Having a clear sense of organizational structure, knowing who the big bosses are, who to talk to, the organization’s goals and objectives, and how the organization works is the only way to let others know that you know what you are doing.

Being a leader is not what making others do things. It’s about who you are, what you know, and what you do. You will be someone what your followers must be.

Studies have shown that one other criteria of good leadership is the confidence your followers have of you. If they trust you, they will be with you whatever it takes for the organization to succeed.

Trust and confidence is built on ethics, trustworthiness, and good relationships.

The manner of dealing with others, and the relationships you build build the foundation of your organization. The stronger the relationship, the stronger the trust and confidence they have in your capabilities.

Once you have those things, you may now move to communicate the goals and objectives you are to undertake.

Communication is a very essential key to good leadership. Without this you can not be a good leader. The knowledge and technical expertise you have must be clearly transmitted to others.

Also, one cannot be a good leader and unless you have sound judgement. You must be able to assess situations, weigh the advantages and disadvantages of any decision, and actively consult your people in finding out a solution.

It is this judgment that your people will depend upon. Therefore, good decision-making skills is essential to the success of your organization.

Leaders are not do-it-all heroes. A leader doesn’t know every single thing, and you should not rely upon your skills alone.

You should acknowledge and take advantage of the skills and abilities of your followers. It is only when you can say that your organization is working as one.

Remember becoming a leader takes time. One cannot do this in a snap. Remember, also, that it is not about just you. It is about you and the people around you.

Do you have the drive to be a leader? Do you have the ability to work with people? Then start now. Take your stand and be leader today.
